Evernote: 7 easy steps to editing an Evernote note created by another program

If you used Evernote before with 3rd-party apps such as Livescribe’s SmartPens then you might have encountered the message:

This note was created in another application

To edit this note, open it in the app where it was created.

And because of that it is not possible to edit the note directly.

To work around that, follow those easy steps:

  1. Select the note or notes you want to edit but are unable to and export them as an ENEX file
  2. Edit the ENEX file with your favorite editor
  3. Search for something similar to:

    <note-attributes><content-class>livescribe.page.1_0_2</content-class></note-attributes>

  4. The essential thing is to find the “<note-atributes>” and what’s inside that tag and remove that whole tag (and its inside) altogether from the exported ENEX file
  5. Finally, import the ENEX file again. This time, you will be able to edit the notes
  6. Verify that the newly imported notes are now editable
  7. Finally, delete the non-editable notes
